The conscience of America, the voice which cries out when we have strayed from our founding principles, is often the voice of the Liberal. The word "liberal" in a general political sense has always meant the "tendency toward freedom." But now the "L-word" has a bad connotation. Why? Because the liberal movement of today earned it. Liberal statesmen have often ceased to be America's conscience, becoming instead the voice of constitutent groups. Traditional liberalism fell into stagnation at the end of the 20th Century .
Mr. Ruane proposes a new liberal manifesto for the 21st Century - a new voice from the conscience of America.
